The Prince Alwaleed Bin Talaal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding and The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre published its first edition in what promises to be an annual series of insight into the movers and shakers of the Muslim world. Entitled The 500 Most Influential Muslims 2009, the book categorizes Muslims’ influential capacities into 15 categories: scholarly , political, administrative, lineage, preachers, women, youth, philanthropy, development, science and technology, arts and culture, Qu’ran reciters, media, radicals, international Islamic networks and issues of the day. In this category, there are four people honored living in the United States.

Mohamad Chakaki is a founding member of Green Muslims, a Washington, D.C. group that seeks to relate sustainable environmental policy to faith. He works on projects in the US and the Middle East.

Fuad El Hibri is the CEO of Emergent BioSolutions, Inc. BioSolutions is a multinational bio-pharmaceutical company that is the sole-holder of the FDA-approved anthrax vaccine. He is also Chairman of the East West Resources Corporation and Chairman and Treasurer of the El Hibri Charitable Foundation.

Dr. Mehmet Oz is a cardiothoracic surgeon recently named one of the sexiest men alive for 2009. A frequent visitor of the Oprah Winfrey show and now host of his own show, he is a professor at Columbia University and leads numerous charities and organizations. He has authored several books on personal health.

Ahmed Zewail is the recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on femotochemistry. He is the Linus Pauling Professor at the California Institute for Technology and was recently asked to serve at President Obama’s invitation as an adviser to the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. My name is Robert Burrows, Vice President of Investor Relations for Emergent. Thank you for joining us today as we discuss Emergent BioSolutions financial results for the second quarter and first six months of 2009. As is customary, our call today is open to all participants. In addition, the call is being recorded and is copyrighted by Emergent BioSolutions.

Bonus may be a bad word right now — but not for a biotech that is actually making money.

Alongside minimal pay raises, Emergent BioSolutions Inc. execs received bonuses in 2008 that increased anywhere from 5 percent to 43 percent from their 2007 bonuses. Fuad El-Hibri, chief executive officer and chairman of the Rockville company, got the lowest increase, but the highest bonus at $323,250. The highest increase was doled out to Kyle Keese, senior vice president of manufacturing operations, who took home a $96,460 bonus for 2008.

Though, at least one manager’s perk wasn’t quite so perky last year. Robert Kramer, who stepped down in January as head of Emergent’s manufacturing subsidiary and instead will manage a contract that the company hopes to nail with the federal government this year, got a 48 percent decrease in his bonus from 2007, bringing his 2008 figure to $78,815.

While Emergent is one of the few biotechs netting a profit, its numbers did dip slightly from 2007 to 2008 — by 2 percent of revenue and 10 percent of profits — because of fewer or delayed shipments of its anthrax vaccine to the federal government. But whereas other biotechs have been shaving down their work forces, Emergent added people in 2008, up to 587 people from 560 in 2007.

Specifics of the management changes, which will become effective on April 1, 2007, include:

Daniel J. Abdun-Nabi is being promoted to president of Emergent BioSolutions, overseeing a majority of the company’s corporate functions. Mr. Abdun-Nabi was formerly senior vice president and general counsel for the company.

Robert G. Kramer, Sr., is being promoted to executive vice president manufacturing operations, with responsibility for global manufacturing, reporting directly to Edward J. Arcuri, Ph.D., the company’s chief operating officer. Mr. Kramer will also continue as president of Emergent Biodefense Operations Lansing.

Denise Esposito is being promoted to senior vice president and general counsel. Ms. Esposito was formerly vice president and deputy general counsel for the company.
Mauro Gibellini is being promoted to senior vice president corporate development. Mr. Gibellini was formerly vice president corporate development for the company.
In addition, the company announced that Steven N. Chatfield will be joining the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in the UK in the Fall of 2007.

Dr. Chatfield, who will remain with Emergent BioSolutions on a full time basis through August 2007, has held dual roles as chief scientific officer and president, Emergent Product Development UK, since June 2004. The company is recruiting for a new chief scientific officer.

ROCKVILLE, MD, November 19, 2007 —Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (NYSE: EBS) announced today that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has reaffirmed its commitment to continue to purchase BioThrax^® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) under the current contract for 18.75 million doses that provides for a firm fixed price of $400 million plus an additional $34 million upon receipt of regulatory approval of four year dating.  In a recent notification, HHS stated the following:

• HHS plans to continue purchasing BioThrax under the contract, which is for 18.75 million doses; and

• HHS is diligently working with the Department of Defense (DOD) and other federal partners, as required by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 21 and recommended by a recent Government Accountability Office report, to address effective stockpile management to meet collective requirements.
